CCAs for Pupils

By Amelia Tan

The Straits Times, Friday, September 26, 2008, Page B8

Primary 1 and 2 pupils are now being encourages to take up drama, dance, chess, or join the choir in co-curricular activities (CCAs) as a way to pick up life skills.

These CCAs may be carried out during school hours, so the young ones do not have to stay back in school; extra steps may also have to be taken to ensure their safety.

While upper primary pupils and secondary school students have long had many CCAs to pursue, primary 1 and 2 pupils have, till now, been thought of as too young for extended hours in school.

But school administrators think the adjustments made to let seven- and eight-year olds take on CCAs will be worth it.

Xxxxx primary school principal Jenny Law, for example, has seen her pupils grow in confidence as they pick up and master new interests. Her school designates every Wednesday as Mass CCA Day, when pupils spend an hour on a chosen activity for that term. By the end of the year, each pupils would have tried four activities.

At Haig Girls schools. Primary 2 pupils learn to be independent when they go on overseas choir trips.

Introducing the youngest ones to CCAs also gives the school a way of spotting talent.

At Huamin Primary, primary 1 and 2 pupils found to be good at, for example, hockey have the rest of their primary school years to develop that talent.

The range of CCAs offered at schools exposes pupils to unususal activities. Seng Kang Primary’s 10-week modular CCA programme, for example, introduce its pupils to puppetry, robotics and even fusion dance.

Fun is also key.

Anushka Prasanna Ogale, 10 and in primary 4 at xxxxx Primary School , said: “ We look forward to Mass CCA day because it’s when we can interact with our friends and have fun.”

Dr Ng Eng Hen, the education Minister, said yesterday that the ministry would put more funds into students’ Edusave Accounts. These funds will go out to all who are un secondary school, instead of just those aged up to 16. Removing the age cap, puts these funds for of 9,700 more students.
